12 Peer Evaluations and Lessons Learned

Throughout your career, you will have many opportunities to learn and grow. Reflecting on lessons learned will help you to grow and become a stronger Software Engineer. It is a good practice to start this practice early in your career, including reflecting on things that worked well and things that didn’t work well. Even after you graduate, you should consider every Software Engineering project as an opportunity to learn and improve. After all, it’s rare to ever witness a perfect Software Process that produces optimized and user-friendly software that doesn’t contain any faults.

After each deliverable, take the time to reflect and answer these questions:

  • What worked well? Why did it work well? Will this translate well to other projects?
  • What went wrong? What could have been done differently? How could this be avoided in the future?

As an exercise with your group, independently write two examples for each of the questions and then get together to discuss your answers.
